Underpinned by shared values and a deep commitment to academic excellence, the BMH will shine forth, a lighthouse of mutual respect and cultural co-operation for the modern age.

Origin and Partnership

Many have asked why the Mission Hills Group has ventured into education. Most would know that amidst Mission Hills’ diversified integrated sports, golf and leisure development, Mission Hills has been actively engaged in philanthropy since its founding 25 years ago. Many of the Group’s philanthropic efforts include funding projects in education, sports, culture, and science, fostering youth exchanges between Hong Kong and Mainland China, caring for orphans, helping the disadvantaged in society, supporting outreach programmes, and both spearheading and participating in donation drives to support disaster reliefs.

The Founder of Mission Hills Group, Dr. David Chu, was a fervent supporter of education and made numerous donations over the years to overseas, China and Hong Kong schools. The late Dr. David Chu was a firm believer in the power of education – how it can transform lives and change destinies. Since his passing, the "Dr. David Chu Memorial Foundation" was set up by Dr. Chu’s children to carry on his philanthropic legacy. Under the same spirit and values, his children have ventured into the establishment of education institutions. As Dr. Catherine Chu, Executive Director of Mission Hills Group and Mission Hills Education, and daughter to the Founder, says,

“My five siblings and I feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to study in the best overseas educational institutions, and we hope to bring such excellent teaching pedagogy and curricula into China, to enable our youth to have access to the best of the East and West, without having to leave home so early to study abroad while maintaining a solid foundation in Chinese cultural heritage and language. Our commitment to the development of a pre-eminent international school is to fulfill our father’s dream dating back 20 years, when he already wanted to establish an international school, but the necessary license proved elusive. It is now our honour and privilege to realise this meaningful and transformational dream. Furthermore, the school is a natural extension of Mission Hills’ existing integrated and holistic leisure and community portfolio.”

Bromsgrove School’s desire to partner with Mission Hills stems partly from its positive experience of successfully educating international pupils in the United Kingdom over many years. Bromsgrove pride itself in the inclusion of children from over 40 nationalities in its School in UK today, all of whom attain outstanding academic results and go on to attend prestigious universities alongside their British schoolmates.

As Headmaster of Bromsgrove School and Bromsgrove School Mission Hills, Mr. Peter Clague, says:

“Education has the power to transcend the boundaries of geography, politics and ideology that sometimes blind us to the rich offerings of other cultures. Bromsgrove is an ancient and highly respected educational institution in Britain. Having found an immediate affinity for the ideals of Mission Hills Education, we now sense that we have much to offer the children in Shenzhen as well. However, we also believe that we have much to learn from the Chinese way of teaching. To blend these two great learning traditions is an exciting prospect. Bromsgrove School Mission Hills will be the chance to combine two bright lights to a bright beacon of educational excellence in a truly multicultural enterprise.”

With over 450 senior boarders, Bromsgrove is skilled in catering for all learning needs; academic, sporting, musical, social and pastoral. The exciting opportunity in Shenzhen will be to offer Bromsgrove’s educational expertise to younger Chinese children, still in familiar surroundings and close to their families. Bromsgrove School Mission Hill’s aim is to provide a truly bilingual education that is forged from the great strengths of both partners. Bromsgrove’s reputation for flair, discipline and academic rigour is a perfect match for virtues that are already espoused in the Mission Hill’s Pre-School. There is also great harmony between the existing Pre-School’s Chinese values of Ren, Yi, Li, Zhi, & Xin and Bromsgrove’s core values; humility and confidence, compassion and ambition, respect and curiosity, tolerance and vision.

Beyond the immediate benefits of a world-class education for the children of Shenzhen, there are many other invaluable opportunities to be gained from this partnership. As Headmaster expresses,

“We envisage exchanges between pupils and teachers in both schools. Shared elements of our curriculum will allow learners to move between China and the UK. Staff will be able to train and teach in both schools. With the advent of high definition video-conferencing, we will now be able to share classes in real-time and facilitate interaction between the schools on a regular basis at no cost. The potential benefits for language learning and cultural co-operation are especially exciting.”
